AIRCHECK OF THE WEEK
For week of April 12, 2015
Edition #830

Talent: ED HIDER as FENWAY IN THE MORNING
Station: WMEX Boston
Date: April 11, 1961
Time: 27:47 (unscoped)

One of the notable features of WMEX in the 1960s was its use of "house names" for its deejays.

If you did the morning show, you were Fenway. Ed Hider was the first Fenway, with Jack Gale, Larry Justice, J.J. Jeffrey, Tom Shovan and Jack McKrell later taking the role.

Melvin X. Melvin and Dan Donovan were also used as house names at WMEX, with several different jocks assuming those monikers. Not all of the WMEX jocks used a house name - a notable exception was Arnie "Woo Woo" Ginsburg, who jocked there under that name from 1958 to 1967.

The use of house names at WMEX was phased out sometime in the late '60s. We wonder what the listeners and the affected jocks thought of this practice.

Hider also jocked at WNBF Binghamton, N.Y., WINS New York, KYA and KNBR San Francisco, KDAY and KFI Los Angeles. Known as "Mr. Comedy," he wrote Take My Turntable - Please - a 125-page book of comedy bits. He was one of the writers on The Donny and Marie Osmond Show, and created The Electric Weenie, one of the first comedy services.

Enjoy Ed Hider as Fenway on WMEX here.
