AIRCHECK OF THE WEEK
For week of
November 15, 2015
Edition #859
Subject
: AFVN: THE GI'S COMPANION, PT. 1
Until now, it has been a largely unexplored part of Top 40 radio history.
During the Vietnam War, the American Forces Vietnam Network provided U.S. military personnel and civilians with a valuable link with home - namely a Top 40 radio station that could be heard all over the theatre of war in southeast Asia. AFVN provided news from home, information for servicemen and civilians alike, plus Top 40 music just like you might hear on your local radio station back home. This valuable morale booster was heard in bases, helicopters, ships, cockpits, even on battlefields. The 24-hour service was manned around the clock by hundreds of U.S. military personnel and civilians.
During the
last week of Ocober 2015, WEBY in Milton, Fla., - home of Naval Air Station
Whiting Field - presented a five-part, 10-hour series on AFVN Vietnam and repeated
it on Veteran's Day. We have the entire show as
recorded from the Internet feed. It contains numerous airchecks from AFVN and
interviews with those who were there. And please donate, if you can,
to keep WEBY on the air.
