Weird Beard put the "wacky" in WAKY.

The man born Burt Mackert was a nightime jock at WAKY from 1966 to 1971. As part of his act, the "dropout from bugle school" would play a bugle over the air. He especially enjoyed playing along with Herb Alpert's "This Guys in Love with You", which has a trumpet solo.

Not to be confused with Russ "Weird Beard" Knight of KLIF and KBOX fame, this Weird Beard left WAKY to take a PD gig at WBBF Rochester, New York. His departure coincided with his death of his son in a drowning accident. Mackert later worked as a dispatcher with the Rochester Police Department. He died November 22, 1995 due to complications from MS. He was 50.
