WFYR lit a fire under Chicago radio for nearly two
decades.
Previously known as WKFM, new owner RKO General changed the call letters to WFYR in 1973, the 100th anniversary of the Chicago fire. It was an automated oldies outlet at first, doing dances from the aptly named "FYR Station" on Friday and Saturday nights.
WFYR adopted a live adult contemporary format in 1977, but in January 1989 transitioned back to oldies. Summit Broadcasting bought the station that year and promptly switched it back to oldies in October. The WFYR era ended in 1991 when Major Broadcasting took over and the station became a hard-rock outlet as WBBZ, "The Blaze."
