CHILDE" DICK KEMP

The "Wilde Childe" was a winner everywhere he
jocked, including the station with that very name.
The fast-talking, witty Dick Kemp - heard here on WYNR's (Winner's) first day - was an entertaining force at the Chicago outlet intended as competition for the well-established WLS. But despite the best efforts of the Gordon McLendon owned station, WYNR's 5,000-watt signal was no match for the 50,000-watt blowtorch that was WLS. By 1964 WYNR was gone, replaced by an all-news station appropriately named WNUS. (McLendon liked call letters that sounded like a word).
Kemp was at KLIF Dallas prior to WNYR. His stops after WNYR include WYSL Buffalo, N.Y., WIXY Cleveland and WIXZ McKeesport, Pa. He moved to Alaska afer his radio days.
