It's gone now, its once vibrant programming merely a memory, but at one time CFRW was the place to hear the hits in Winnipeg.

The station that became CFRW first went on the air as CJQM-AM on November 1, 1963 (CJQM-FM signed on at the same time; the two stations simulcast easy-listening programming.)

The call signs changed to CFRW-AM and CFRW-FM in 1969 as the AM side transitioned to a Top 40 outlet.

CHUM Ltd. purchased the stations in 1974. Three years later they moved CFRW-AM from 1470 to 1290 with branding as 13CFRW.

These were the glory days of CFRW. Under the guidance of station manager Bob Laine, the station flourished with jocks like Ron Able, Tim "Trucker" Bradley, Racoon Carney, Pat Cardinal, Lee Marshall, Gary Christian, Dick Reeves and many more.

The first era of CFRW ended in 1987 with the change to soft rock and a branding switch to The Fox CIFX. After numerous format changes, including adult standards, talk and sports, the CFRW call letters were brought back in 2002 with the switch to oldies. After flipping back to sports, then to comedy, Bell Media closed down CFRW (and five other AM stations) for good on June 14, 2023.

Wilf Brown is heard with sports and Terry Craig has the news on this great audio capture of 13CFRW.
