Tom Dooley was a
funny and energetic jock who entertained throughout the golden
years of Top 40 radio. But sometimes his comments got him in
trouble.
The man born George Patrick Thomas O'Dooley got pink-slipped at KHJ after demanding on-air an investigation of Richard Nixon regarding his involvement in the JFK assassination and a few others. No matter, as there were lots of other stations that wanted him.
Dooley covered much of North America on his radio travels, from Cincinnati (WSAI) in the north, Miami (WQAM) in the south, Philadelphia (WFIL and WIFI-FM) in the east, and Los Angeles (KHJ) in the west. In between, the funny, energetic and very much in demand Dooley was heard on KELI Tulsa, KNUZ Houston, WAKY Louisville, WMPS and WHBQ Memphis, WORD Spartanburg, SC, WAYS Charlotte and KRIZ Phoenix.
Dooley played guitar, drums and piano, recording with the Mar-Keys, Bill Black's Combo and Ace Cannon. Later in life, he did a Christian radio show called "The Journey." The Chicago native died in 2010 of brain cancer at the age of 63.
