AIRCHECK OF THE WEEK

Edition #1307
Week of August 4, 2024

Talent: GARY ROBERTS
Station: KOIL Omaha, Neb.
Date: August 19, 1968
Time: 1:00:29 (unscoped)

KOIL got its name from an oil company.

Originally owned by the Mona Motor Oil Company, the station went on the air July 10, 1925 at 1080 broadcasting from Council Bluffs, Iowa. It moved across the river to Omaha and up the dial to 1290 in the '30s.

KOIL carried dramas, comedies, news and sports in its early days. As television grew, KOIL moved to a Top 40 music format under new owner Don Burden. It became a popular station among teens and young adults. However, allegations of bribery involving Burden and the FCC led to the station going off the air September 2, 1976. DJ Gene Shaw signed the station off with Simon and Garfunkel's "The Sound of Silence."

The station returned three months later under new ownership. Several format and dial changes later, KOIL is now a news-talk station.
