AIRCHECK OF THE WEEK

Edition #1219
Week of November 6, 2022

Talent
: CHRIS ALAN
Station: WMET Chicago
Date: November 2, 1977
Time:
 30:13 (unscoped)
7:14 (scoped)

It was a Top 40 station disguised as a rock station.

Chicago's WMET switched to a Top 40 format under its previous call letters WDHF in 1974. The calls were changed in 1976 to WMET, which continued the Top 40 format while positioning itself as a rock station. In the late '70s the station became a victim of the disco craze. Top 40 programming on 95.5 ceased in 1979 as WMET switched to a harder rock format.

The station's glory days as a rock station ended in 1986, when the station went to adult contemporary. Thus ended the all-too-short life of WMET, The Station That Rocked Chicago.
