Banana Joe
went from jock to owner to syndicator.
The man born Joe Montione got his first paid on-air gig in 1972 at WILK Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Before long he broke into the big time at WFIL Philadelphia. A string of major stations followed - WHYI Miami, CHUM Toronto, WLOF Orlando and KHJ Los Angeles.
Montione moved into station ownership in 1983 with the purchase of WHTF York, Pennsylvania. The next year his ownership group bought WTLQ in Montione's hometown of Pittston, Pennsylvania.
After selling the two stations in 1988, Montione got into syndication with the Banana Joe Flashback Show. He later joined Premiere Radio Networks as National Programming/Marketing Director. In 2003, he formed the Banana Joe Radio Group, launching flashbacktop40.com in 2005.
Montione died September 11, 2021 of natural causes. The Hartford native was 67.
