KCBQ was a "monumental" station in more ways than one.
On August 28, 2010 - at a ceremony attended by some 400 former KCBQ staffers and fans - Shotgun Tom Kelly unveiled a wonderful monument dedicated to the Top 40 station that operated from 1958 to 1978, and whose alumni includes some of radio's greatest names.
The monument was funded by the many ex-personalities and fans who will always have a special place in their heart for this legendary hit music station. (If you're going, the monument is located at 9416 Mission Gorge Road, Santee, California).
Gerry Peterson was KCBQ program director in 1977 (oddly, his name is not on the monument). It was the last gasp for a station that would drop Top 40 the following year for country. KCBQ's demise as a Top 40 outlet wasn't through lack of effort or energy, as evidenced by this great 'check from the early fall of 1977.
